It was because of all of this messing around and having to modify factory parts that I went for the hydraulic conversion using 100% factory parts. Then there's the reversing light switch problem. Even if you modify them to fit (time, money, effort) they will be working incorrectly as the cable will be fixed and the sheath will move up and down the cable rather than the cable moving up and down inside a static sheath. Therefore the sheath rests on the actuator and the end of the cable sits in the end of the long bracket, except - neither the actuator or the long bracket are designed to work this way. When people do the cable conversion I understand that they run a normal Mk2 shorter cable that comes along the bulkhead and points towards the front of the car. The clutch cable comes over the gearbox and doubles back to face towards the bulkhead. The cable mechanism is designed to run with the cable end on the clutch actuator and the outer sheath in the mount on the long bracket. The long bracket needs to be spaced etc to fit, the mount points on the 02J are narrower I bought all the parts to do the conversion myself years ago.
